Harry’s Razors Review
In this Harry’s razors review with Winston (metal) handle, I’ll do all I can to help you make an informed purchase decision. I’ll also compare Harry’s to Gillette giving you even more to consider. When it comes to shaving, if you have a bad experience you are not likely to want to repeat it. With Harry’s I found that the shave is close and smooth. And while it isn’t quite as smooth as Gillette with the vibrating handle, it is definitely good.
Harry’s Packaging
Harry’s comes shipped in a nice cardboard box without anything fancy. Just a bit “H” and a plain brown interior, which contains two boxes – one for the handle and one for the blades.. The handle comes in a nicely designed cardboard box and does have one blade attached. The blades come in a cardboard box with a plastic interior containing four blades. This gives you a starting number of five blades though replacements do come in boxes of four.
Harry’s Razors Shave Head
The Harry’s razor shave head is very similar to the Gillette brand but does has some differences. Most notable is that the Harry’s head design and its interface with the handle make it quite difficult to shave under the nose. The blades on the Harry’s are much closer together, making me believe that this head will clog if you have a thick beard. (My beard is very thin hairs and I have never once had a clog in over a year of use with Harry’s.) Harry’s has fewer rubber hair lifters, but honestly I have no idea if this makes any difference. Seems like a gimmick in the first place. The flexibility of the Harry’s is both better and worse than Gillette. One the one hand, it is much stiffer because it doesn’t have a two-part hinge but instead has flexible rubber/plastic. On the other hand, it does flex quite a lot farther than Gillette. In my opinion, neither of these differences makes a real difference in the quality of the shave, they are just different. The blade depth on Harry’s is just barely deeper (farther inset from the shaver face, meaning further from your skin) than Gillette. And I mean barely – so it’s pretty much negligible.
Harry’s Razors Handle
I have the all (almost) metal handle called the ‘Winston’ for my Harry’s. It is very shiny and smooth. It also tapers down to a rounded point on the end rather than ballooning out. I was concerned that I would drop it or that it might slip out of my hand. However, I cannot recall this being an issue at all during the past one year of use. While other brands are covered and coated with grippy rubber ridges and lines, I see no real need for them.
The offset of the blade to the line of the handle is a concern, though. The Gillette is offset quite a bit so that the handle isn’t close to your face while you are shaving. Harry’s handle offset is very little and does cause issues, especially under the nose. In fact, it is nearly impossible to get a good shave up under the nostrils an center of the nose.
Replacing the head on Harry’s is actually very easy but it is firm enough that I have never had one pop off accidentally.
Harry’s Razors Shave Quality
With a brand new Harry’s blade I find I get a pretty good shave. I have noticed that from time to time I miss a small strip on the sides (sideburn area), but part of me thinks that I’m just in too big of a hurry. Harry’s will seem to ‘drag’ a little if you have been using a Gillette with the vibrating handle, but the shave is just fine. As already mentioned it is very difficult to shave under the nose, and since Harry’s lacks a trimmer blade you’ll need to struggle to get to that area. One solution I have is that I use a small two-blade razor for that area now (I have a new brand I’m reviewing so I just happen to have an extra type handy). But that is a non-solution. If there were a deal breaker at all for Harry’s, this is it. They have no other options for blades so if you don’t like this set up, than Harry’s razors are not for you.
- Affordable
- Sharp
- No-nick design
- No vibration
- No trimmer
- Difficult to use under nose
Harry's razors will provide you with a great shave at deep savings over 'national brand' razors. You'll be able to change blades much more regularly and still save money. While lacking the vibrating handle and extra trimmer blade, these blades still get the job done quickly, safely and comfortably. One exception is the difficulty of shaving under the nose.
